BY SCOREHey readers (if there are any of you left from the past two-plus years I haven't posted on this blog)! Lately I haven't been actively flag-designing for existing political entities, but who knows; sooner or later I may start that again. Anyway, before I continue, let me say that I have gotten a little more knowledgeable of certain things in the time that's passed since the early days of this blog. One of the things I've learned is that criticism is often best when it is thought out. By reading some of my past posts, you can tell that I didn't always think that. I overused words like "stupid", "ugly", "worst", and "bad". Many of the flag designs I've criticized are indeed stupid and ugly, but hearing that after so many times gets annoying, even to myself, the author, now. So sorry to those of you I annoyed. I was also a very pesky member of the vexillological community some years ago, so if any of you NAVA members happen to stumble across this, sorry about that.

Now, on to my idea:

I was looking through some of this unflavored commentary of my past self earlier today, and even though I was ashamed of my youthful insanity, I did get an idea about of the pain. I could improve my reviews of the world's flag designs. Some of the designs have changed over time, and even my opinions of the more constant ones have changed. So I thought I'd create a Yahtzee-inspired scoring system upon which to rate the world's flags, and from the scoring results, I could explain my opinions in a much more constructive manner.

So here's my draft scoring system, inspired by the Yahtzee method, at the moment intended for national flags (possibly others):

----

Flags can score points in the following categories: simplicity, originality, and style. The first two categories can be measured and scored. The style category is based on my opinion.

A. Simplicity

Start with 10 points.

Division amount: lose 1 point for every design layout division that adds to the flag's total number of layout divisions above six

Complex elements*: lose 4 points for contiguous elements with details too small to make out

Written characters: lose 2 points for each letter

*Complex elements are tested by resizing the flag design (from 200x300p) to 20% of its width and height (e.g. 40x60p), then resizing it back. If some of the element's details are lost, then that elements counts for this category.

B. Originality

Layout: 4 points for a design layout used by only 2 or fewer other nations (2 points if 3 to 20; no points if 21 to 40; lose 2 points if more than 40)

Main colors: 4 points if main color list is used by only 2 or fewer other nations (2 points if 3 to 20); no points if 21 to 40; lose 2 points if more than 40)

Symbolic elements: 2 points if design features a non-complex symbolic element used by only 2 or fewer other nations (1 point if 3 to 20)

Foreign similarity: lose 5 points if flag is similar in main colors and division layout to more than 2 other national flags

Common elements: lose 4 points if a design element is used on more than 40 national flags (lose 2 points for 20-40)

*Shape: 8 points for a significantly non-rectangular shape.

C. Style

Style is measured by by opinion, on a scale of 0 to 10.

----

So there's my scoring system for now. It might change if things turn out to be seriously flawed. Hope you all are still enjoying this blog.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1126808953157986901.post-81873030588348372572009-03-01T13:33:00.003-07:002009-03-01T13:36:41.677-07:00YouTubeThis flag design for the extremely popular video-sharing website YouTube is a pile design, which means that there is a triangle on the hoist of the flag. On this flag, I used a pile to resemble the "play" button of YouTube videos, and added two vertical bars in the fly to resemble the "pause" button. The colors red, white, and black, are the main colors of the YouTube logo.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1126808953157986901.post-17202955526153119012008-09-07T11:40:00.002-06:002008-09-07T11:41:52.186-06:00Hungary
The current flag of Hungary is simple and symbolic. There would be no problem with it if there weren't tens of other nations in Europe with tricolours! So, I simply rearranged the colours into a unique design, but it's still simple.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1126808953157986901.post-7003690281597225212008-09-07T11:23:00.002-06:002008-09-07T11:28:34.798-06:00Canadian Thanksgiving DayIf the United States has a Thanksgiving Day, Canada should have one, too. And if I design a flag for the United States Thanksgiving Day, I should design one for Canadian Thanksgiving Day.

The flag's proportions are 1:2, the most common flag proportions in Canada. The colours of the flag are the Canadian colours, red and white. The partial cross represents separation from England, and is in the shape of a T, for thanksgiving. A representation of the constellation Orion appears on the hoist side of the flag, symbolising harvest time. The constellation on this flag is made of thirteen stars, representing the thriteen Canadian provinces and major territories.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1126808953157986901.post-3235819003841962152008-06-19T18:04:00.004-06:002008-06-19T18:10:59.456-06:00Anchorage, AlaskaThis Anchorage, Alaska, flag design consists of a hoist-facing yellow pentagon on a blue background, with a blue anchor in the center of the flag. The blue and yellow represent Alaska and the anchor is a symbol of the city. The arrangement of the yellow shape is similar to the geographic layout of the peninsula which Anchorage sits on.
The current flag of Anchorage is yellow with the city's seal on it, and of course, the word "ANCHORAGE" on it, in all caps. Although it's unique, it needs a much simpler format. My design keeps the uniqueness, but retains all symbolism, and looks as good at the current flag, possibly even better.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1126808953157986901.post-66241859580908125582008-03-31T16:34:00.007-06:002008-03-31T16:45:01.486-06:00Ontario You must admit, the current Onatrio flag is quite complex, along with that super-complex Union Jack. And since Canada is independent from the United Kingdom, their provinces could help display that fact by removing the Union Jack from their flags.

In this design, I a red background with a white cross. The red and white are the colors of Canada, and the cross hints at the United Kingdom, but doesn't scream it like the real flag. I took the green shield with leaves and transformed it into a canton for this design, and the result looks as Ontarioan as anything.
A masterpiece, if I do say so myself.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1126808953157986901.post-87328256406888459222008-03-31T16:34:00.004-06:002008-03-31T16:39:50.192-06:00Serbia I bet you've heard of the recent split of Yugoslavia into Montenegro, Serbia, and Kosovo. Kosovo's new flag is easily much better than the other two nations'. Montenegro's is complicated, ugly, and just plain weird, and Serbia's is not only complicated and just plain weird, but it adds to the European tricolor confusion, but it doesn't seem that they'll adopt a flag without a tricolor, so I designed this flag.

I kept the Serbian tricolor of red, blue, and white, and instead of the coat of arms, I placed a Serbian cross in the canton area of the flag. It's golden because Serbia is looking forward to a "golden" future.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1126808953157986901.post-40393147026332703982007-11-22T07:46:00.000-07:002007-11-22T07:53:38.802-07:00United States Thanksgiving Day

Sorry if I'm not updating this blog anymore. But, since this is a holiday in the United States, I decided to design a flag for the holiday, Thanksgiving Day.

The red, white, and blue are from the flags of the United States, the Protestants, and the United Kingdom. The cross represents the reason why the Puritans and Separatists (Pilgrims) came to America from England: to worship God in their own way. I have no idea why I chose white as the background, but I think it looks nice.

Why no turkey? Well, don't you think a flag would look stupid with a turkey on it? What about other foods? Well, I just didn't include any food on the flag because I didn't want it to get messy. LOL just kidding. I don't think food is a good symbol to put on a flag, and if you include one food, you pretty much have to include all of the food commonly associated with Thanksgiving in the United States. But you can use this flag as a tablecloth if it's big enough; that way, you can "put food on it". ;-)
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1126808953157986901.post-31381393500912060032007-08-25T16:45:00.000-06:002007-08-25T16:48:12.716-06:00United States

Isn't this beautiful? Many people, especially Americans, disagree with that statement. Why do they? Well, my guess is because they are attached to it and have grown up with the design and feel that if they criticized their nation's flag, they would feel unpatriotic or something. In other words, they are proud of their nation and feel that they should be proud of their flag. This should not be the case. People should not be proud of a bad flag design.

Now people ask, "Why is it a bad flag design? It has tons of sybolism, and it looks great." Yes, that is true, but did you know that a flag will always have a lot of symbolism if you cram way too many symbols onto one design? That is why the United States flag is bad. Because it is much too complicated. People might say, "No, it is not complicated. There are only stars and stripes." Now, that is false. Only stars and stripes? And how many stars and stripes are there? "Only sixty-three." Only sixty-three? ONLY? The United States flag is complicated and should be changed.

Some people might ask, "Why does it need to be changed after 47 years?" Well, things change over time, especially the United States. The original thirteen stripes and Union Jack wasn't a good design, either. Way too many stripes; it gives some people headaches, I'm guessing. Also looks like a candy cane when wrapped around a pole. Now that's funny.
Anyway, things change, and flags do, too. It is time for a change. Also, did you ever wonder why the stars are five-pointed? There is no reason. There goes a lot of that "symbolism". What do stars have to do with the United States? Nothing. There goes a lot more of the symbolism.

Then people might ask, "Well, no design could be better than the current United States flag." If people design some, we will find one design which stands out.

I am hoping for a new flag for the United States of America. I will be trying to design some, and looking for more. If you have any designs, please email them to me.

It is time for a better flag for the United States of America. There are also many proposed flags for this could-be nation. The most popular one can be found on the Wikipedian Casacadia article, but I think it looks way too much like the flag of Lesotho, and the black evergreen just does not make any sense at all.

This design by Andrew Rogers is simple and symbolic. Israel has many flags with blue background, and this was inspired by many of those designs.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1126808953157986901.post-34405285295426619122007-06-26T07:59:00.001-06:002008-06-19T19:12:58.483-06:00Fiji

I designed this Fiji flag design with keeping in mind that it is now an independent nation and no longer needs the Union Jack on its flag. I used the great-looking coat of arms in a triangular pile design with two shades of blue, to represent the ocean. The two dark blue triangles represent the two major islands of Fiji, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
