Lately I haven't been actively flag-designing for existing political entities, but who knows; sooner or later I may start that again. Anyway, before I continue, let me say that I have gotten a little more knowledgeable of certain things in the time that's passed since the early days of this blog. One of the things I've learned is that criticism is often best when it is thought out. By reading some of my past posts, you can tell that I didn't always think that. I overused words like "stupid", "ugly", "worst", and "bad". Many of the flag designs I've criticized are indeed stupid and ugly, but hearing that after so many times gets annoying, even to myself, the author, now. So sorry to those of you I annoyed. I was also a very pesky member of the vexillological community some years ago, so if any of you <a href="http://nava.org/">NAVA</a> members happen to stumble across this, sorry about that.<div><br /></div><div>Now, on to my idea:</div><div><br /></div><div>I was looking through some of this unflavored commentary of my past self earlier today, and even though I was ashamed of my youthful insanity, I did get an idea about of the pain. I could improve my reviews of the world's flag designs. Some of the designs have changed over time, and even my opinions of the more constant ones have changed. So I thought I'd create a Yahtzee-inspired scoring system upon which to rate the world's flags, and from the scoring results, I could explain my opinions in a much more constructive manner.</div><div><br /></div><div>So here's my draft scoring system, inspired by the Yahtzee method, at the moment intended for national flags (possibly others):</div><div><br /></div><div>----</div><div><br /></div><div>Flags can score points in the following categories: simplicity, originality, and style. The first two categories can be measured and scored. The style category is based on my opinion.</div><div><br /></div><div><b><span class="Apple-style-span">A. Simplicity</span></b></div><div><br /></div><div>Start with 10 points.</div><div><br /></div><div>Division amount: lose 1 point for every design layout division that adds to the flag's total number of layout divisions above six</div><div>Complex elements*: lose 4 points for contiguous elements with details too small to make out</div><div>Written characters: lose 2 points for each letter</div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span">*Complex elements are tested by resizing the flag design (from 200x300p) to 20% of its width and height (e.g. 40x60p), then resizing it back. The colours of the flag are the Canadian colours, red and white. The partial cross represents separation from England, and is in the shape of a T, for thanksgiving. A representation of the constellation Orion appears on the hoist side of the flag, symbolising harvest time. Although it's unique, it needs a much simpler format. The red and white are the colors of Canada, and the cross <em>hints</em> at the United Kingdom, but doesn't scream it like the real flag. Many people, especially Americans, disagree with that statement. Why do they? Well, my guess is because they are attached to it and have grown up with the design and feel that if they criticized their nation's flag, they would feel unpatriotic or something. In other words, they are proud of their nation and feel that they should be proud of their flag. This should not be the case. People should not be proud of a bad flag design.<br /><br />Now people ask, "Why is it a bad flag design? It has tons of sybolism, and it looks great." Yes, that is true, but did you know that a flag will always have a lot of symbolism if you cram way too many symbols onto one design? That is why the United States flag is bad. Because it is much too complicated. People might say, "No, it is not complicated. There are only stars and stripes." Now, that is false. <strong>Only</strong> stars and stripes? And how many stars and stripes are there? "Only sixty-three." <strong>Only</strong> sixty-three? <strong>ONLY?</strong> The United States flag is complicated and should be changed.<br /><br />Some people might ask, "Why does it need to be changed after 47 years?" Well, things change over time, especially the United States. The original thirteen stripes and Union Jack wasn't a good design, either. Way too many stripes; it gives some people headaches, I'm guessing. Also looks like a candy cane when wrapped around a pole. Now that's funny.<br />Anyway, things change, and flags do, too. It is time for a change. Also, did you ever wonder why the stars are <strong><em>five-pointed?</em></strong> There is no reason. There goes a lot of that "symbolism". What do stars have to do with the United States? Nothing. There goes a lot more of the symbolism.<br /><br />Then people might ask, "Well, no design could be better than the current United States flag." That's why the current Santa Fean flag is ugly.<br /><br />This design uses a horizontal tricolor pattern which is thankfully not used anywhere. The red and white represent Spain and New Mexico. The green, white, and red, represent Mexico, and the Red, white, and blue represent the United States. The Zia symbol is a symbol of the state of New Mexico, and the green figure represents Santa Fe being the capital city of the state of New Mexico. The flag resembles a common sunset or sunrise in the city, when the Sandia Mountains turn red. The blue represents the night sky and the ice and the Southern Ocean and water. The yellow represents the aurora australis, a common sight in Antarctica. The white represents Antarctica. A representation of Crux appears right by the hoist of the flag, and Crux is a symbol of the Southern Hemisphere. The stars are represented by circles instead of pointed star symbols because different countries use different symbols for stars, but no countries use circles as representations of stars, symbolizing Anarctica having no government and possibly being the happiest place in the universe. It is placed by the hoist so the strong Antarctic winds do not wear it off of the flag. The flag is of long proportions for the same reason.</div><br /><div>There are three widely used designs for the flag of Antarctica, but they all have problems.</div><br /><div>One design is a design with an orange background, a white capital letter "A" on a part of a circle, with two hands holding that up, all in white. The white hands could offend some people. The hands themselves are complicated. The orange does not represent anything.</div><br /><div>Another design has a United Nations blue background, and a United Nations white map of Antarctica. First of all, Antarctica is not controlled by the United Nations. Second, the map of Antarctica is very complicated,</div><br /><div>One more design is similar to the design pictured, but it has a few bad differences. First, the flag is too short and will wear out quickly in the strong Antarctic winds. Second, Crux is placed on the end of the flag, which will make it wear off <strong>very</strong> quickly. Third, Crux is made with five-pointed stars, and the five-pointed star is a symbol of the United States. If the flag of the United Kingdom was changed, the flag of <a href="http://flagdesigner.blogspot.com/2007/05/australia.html">Australia</a> would have to be changed, which could result in a complete change of the flag because Australia is no longer a colony or territory of the United Kingdom. The same thing could happen with <a href="http://flagdesigner.blogspot.com/2007/05/new-zealand.html">New Zealand</a>, <a href="http://flagdesigner.blogspot.com/2007/06/tuvalu.html">Tuvalu</a>, and Fiji. Let's say Australia changed their flag, removing the Union Jack because of the change of the flag of the United Kingdom. Then all of the Australian cities and states with flags with the Union Jack in the corner of their flags would change their flags, removing the Union Jack. Same thing with the other countries. Also, other flags with the Union Jack on it could be changed, such as the flag of <a href="http://flagdesigner.blogspot.com/2007/05/hawaii.html">Hawaii</a>, Bermuda, Ontario, Manitoba, and all the rest. The yellow and blue waves were taken from the Tuvaluan coat of arms, and there are 9 of them represent the 9 main islands of Tuvalu. The green was used to separate the waves from the sky, and it was also taken from the coat of arms. The blue represents the Pacific Ocean. The sun in the canton corner of the flag was used to add a symbol to the flag that was not too complicated but was symbolic enough.</div><div> </div><div>The current flag of Tuvalu has a light blue background with the Union Jack in the canton and nine five-pointed stars in the fly area. First of all, as I mentioned before, the Union Jack is usually used by colonies or territories of the United Kingdom, and Tuvalu is now an independent nation. The nine five-pointed stars are in the shape of Tuvalu, and the five-pointed star has nothing to do with Tuvalu. The five-pointed star is a symbol of the United States, and Tuvalu is not part of the United States. The red stripe and the white star on the United States flag that represent Rhode Island appear in the same positions on this Rhode Island flag design.</span></p><p>The current Rhode Island flag is bad, in my opinion, but I don't think it is as horrible as, let's say, Nebraska's. The bad part is that the flag has a white background, but the main elements of the flag are yellow. <span style="color:#ffff00;">Yellow on white is bad, as it's quite hard to see. Get it?</span><span style="color:#000000;"> Also, the state's motto appears on a blue banner under the main element, a ship's anchor. The motto is "HOPE". There is a moose holding up the state coat of arms, <em>and</em> an elk! Two animals on one flag? One is complicated enough, but <strong>two? <em>And</em></strong> it has "TUEBOR" on top of the sheild on the coat of arms on the flag. The state motto (in Latin) is below the coat of arms in red. And there's an eagle on the top of the flag. The elements on the flag are not only ugly, but they are also very hard to see. And one more thing...why in the world is the motto in Latin? I see absolutely no reason other than to attract foreign people. The design is bad enough, but just recently there was a law that said that three drops of blood had to be added to the flag on the pelican's breast for the flag to be official. This design I came up with took me about four months to come up with.<br /><br />The tricolour design represents three things: First, it represents the motto of Louisiana, "Union, Justice, and Confidence". The blue represents Union, the white represents Justice, and the red represents Confidence. Second, the tricolour represents France, which originally had the state of Louisiana before the United States bought it. And third, the red, white, and blue represents the United States. The five pointed star represents the United States, and the fleur-de-lis represents France. The star is placed a little to the left to avoid being worn off of the flag.</div><div></div><div>The current Kansas flag has the state seal above the center of the flag, and the state military crest above the seal, and the word "KANSAS" in big yellow arial-type font letters below the seal. Here's how the seal looks. It's got thirty-four five-pointed stars arranged in a pattern on the top, and some horses pulling a few wagons on a landscape, away from a small church. There's also some horses in front plowing a field, with a guy with a gray shirt and white trousers. There's a ship on a river in the background behind the horses pulling the wagons across the prairie. There's some smoke coming out of the ship and the church. There's some buffalo in the background. I think the Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo. There's quite a few waves in the water that the ship that has smoke coming out of it is in. Don't forget all that grass. I could go on describing it for a long time, and I haven't even started describing the military crest yet. The point is, it's complicated and it doesn't belong on a flag which is meant to be seen from far away. There are a total of 102 points on the six stars, which represent the 102 counties of Illinois. The "L" shape of the stars represents Abraham <span style="font-size:130%;">L</span><span style="font-size:100%;">incoln, and the state's nickname, "The Land of Lincoln". Also, the blue stripe and the "L" resembles "IL", the state's abbreviaton.</span><br /></p><p>The current Illinos flag is stupid. I'm not sure if this is, either, but I think it is.</p><p>The main feature is a representation of a volcano, with a mountain represented by a green triangle, and lava represented by the red chevron. The light blue is used to make the flag look good. The blue and red represent the United States.</p><p>The current Hawai'i flag has the Union Jack (that's the flag of the United Kingdom used as a jack) in the canton and eight white, red, and blue stripes. The colors used were not very attractive, to me, at least, and the Union Jack made it seem like it wasn't a part of the United States. Also, it hurt my eyes.</p><p>How's this? Better, isn't it? Lettering on a flag is not good, because flags were invented to be recognized from far away, and also, what if the flag was flying the other way? What is "SASNAKRA"? The five-pointed star represents the United States. The green represents the state of Alaska. The blue represents the sky. The star in the sky represents Polaris, a state symbol of Alaska.</div><div>But I think that the Alaska flag will be extremely hard to change because the current one looks great, even though it is a bad flag. The current Alabama flag had just a red saltire (that's an X-shaped cross) on a white background, representing the Confederacy. There was not enough symbolism, so I added a blue five-pointed star on the top of the flag to represent the United States, and the fact that Alabama is the first U.S. state, in alphabetical order.
